GEM Explore Egypt · Citadel, Sultan Hassan, Coptic Cairo, Khan el-Khalili

A private day from the Citadel to Coptic Cairo

A private guide and driver take you through the Citadel, Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifai, the Hanging Church, Abu Serga and Ben Ezra, ending in Khan el-Khalili. Pick it for the guide: a person comes with every option here, and it holds the best rating of the full days at 4.9.

Private Citadel, Coptic and Islamic Cairo Day

About this experience

GEM Explore Egypt builds this day around a guide, which is why the cheapest option costs more than the car-only tours on this site. You start at the Citadel of Saladin and the Muhammad Ali Mosque, drop down to Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifai, cross the city to the Coptic quarter for the Hanging Church, Abu Serga and Ben Ezra, then pass the Al-Hussein Mosque on the way into Khan el-Khalili. Six to eight hours, depending on how long you linger.

Three booking options, all with car and guide. "Car + Guide Only" is the $60 one: you buy tickets yourself. "Car + Guide + Entry Fees" covers the two paid stops, the Citadel at EGP 550 and Sultan Hassan with Al-Rifai at EGP 220, EGP 770 a foreign adult, about $15. "Car + Guide + Fees + Lunch" adds a meal; guests describe a typical Egyptian lunch at a restaurant the guide picks. Unlike a 4-hour tour, this one uses every ticket you'd buy, so the fee option is fair value if you'd rather not queue at windows.

The reviews are the strongest of the private days: 28 of the last 30 on Viator gave five stars. Guests name their guides again and again, and one praised a guide for "always confirming with us first about any stops for shopping". Two four-star reviews mention a shop stop that wasn't on the agenda and a day that felt rushed. Pickup outside central Cairo and Giza costs an extra $15 per person, so check your hotel's district first.

  • The Citadel, Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifai in the same day

What guests say

★★★★★

Our tour guide Ola, a professional, kind and immensely experienced guide went into great detail about all the religious sites and showcased impressive knowledge for both the history and culture. She was also amazing at taking us to local places that had fair prices, while always confirming with us first about any stops for shopping.

★★★★★

We wanted to try Khosary, Egyptian vegetarian dish, she took us to very known local place and have it packed to be taken to a cafe at Khan El Khalili market, where we had it with Egyptian tea watching crowd passing by.

Sonal · Sep 2026
★★★★★

She kept us moving but gave us plenty of opportunities to ask questions or spend more or less time at any particular site. She was also an excellent photographer and took our photos at each site.

Sandy · Jan 2026
★★★★★

She gave us plenty of time to explore the sites on our own as well and never made us feel rushed. She also selected a nice restaurant for lunch.

Tips before you book

  • Take the fee option if you hate queues: this day uses both paid tickets, so you won't pay for anything you skip.
  • Ask for no shop stops at the start of the day. Most guests say their guide asked first; one four-star review didn't get that courtesy.
  • Check the pickup surcharge. The airport, airport hotels, New Cairo, Nasr City and Heliopolis cost $15 per person extra.
  • Visiting on a Friday? The mosques pause for the noon prayer, so expect the guide to reshuffle the order.
  • Bring small notes for the shoe-keepers at Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifai.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in the GEM Explore Egypt Citadel and Old Cairo tour?

Every option includes a private guide, the car with driver, hotel pickup in Cairo or Giza and bottled water. The middle option adds the entry fees (EGP 770 per foreign adult); the top option adds the fees and lunch.

How much does it cost for two people?

The tier table isn't published, so we won't guess. $60 is the per-person rate for the largest group on the car-and-guide option. Two people pay more per head. Enter your party size and option on Viator and the price appears before you pay.

How long is the private Citadel and Coptic Cairo day?

Six to eight hours according to the listing. Traffic between the Citadel and the Coptic quarter decides most of the variation.

Can I do the Citadel on my own instead?

Yes. Buy the ticket by card at the gate (EGP 550) and take an Uber or Careem. Our Citadel tickets guide has the hours and the details. A guide earns the money at Sultan Hassan and in the Coptic churches, where the stories aren't on the signs.
