Deluxe Travel · Al-Muizz Street, Khan el-Khalili, Al-Azhar

Islamic Cairo on foot, ending at Al-Azhar

A guide collects you by minivan and walks you along Al-Muizz Street, through Khan el-Khalili and into Al-Azhar Mosque over about five hours. Pick it for pace: two hours on Al-Muizz alone is the slowest, most explained walk through medieval Cairo on this site.

Islamic Cairo Walk with Al-Azhar Mosque

About this experience

Deluxe Travel spends most of this day on one street. Al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street runs about a kilometre from Bab al-Futuh to Bab Zuwayla and is commonly called the densest run of medieval Islamic buildings anywhere. The itinerary gives it two hours, then an hour in Khan el-Khalili and twenty minutes in Al-Azhar Mosque. Guests remember the stories: one asked about medicine at the medieval hospital of the Qalawun complex and got a lesson on the history of medicine in return.

Three booking options. "Islamic Cairo walking tour" is the default. "Car and Guide" keeps a guide with a car. "Car and Driver Only" drops the guide. The listing is muddled on privacy: it lists "Private tour" in the inclusions but also says up to 12 travellers, and Viator doesn't flag it as private, so don't count on having the guide to yourselves. The bigger catch for solo travellers: a minimum of 2 people per booking.

Tickets aren't included. The itinerary marks Al-Muizz "admission NO", meaning you pay if you go inside: EGP 220 for the unified ticket that covers the Qalawun complex, Barquq, the Bishtak palace and the rest, and a separate EGP 220 for Bayt al-Suhaymi. Al-Azhar and the bazaar are free. One older review warns there's no toilet stop or food on the walk, and another says to watch your footing on uneven, sometimes slippery stone.

What guests say

★★★★★

We stopped by the oldest hospital in the world and asked Zizou about a simple question about medical specialization. He responded with the most insightful story about medicine and innovation in Ancient Egypt.

What a peek into life in Cairo - the streets were chaotic and overwhelming and we LOVED it. Our guide Tito provided so much great information and made sure we were safe and comfortable the entire time.

Good tour with Hussein who showed us the Al Azhar Mosque and walked us around the market and explained the Islamic architecture of the old quarter to us and helped us try some local goodies.

Tips before you book

  • Eat first and bring water. A guest warns there's no toilet stop or food on the walk.

  • Carry EGP 220 per person (by card where accepted) for the Al-Muizz unified ticket, and another EGP 220 if you want Bayt al-Suhaymi.
  • Avoid Friday midday: Al-Azhar closes to visitors for the noon prayer.
  • Women: bring a scarf for Al-Azhar, and cover shoulders and knees.
