The Citadel, the Cave Church and the bazaar

An Egyptologist guide and a private car take you to the Citadel and the Muhammad Ali Mosque, up to the Cave Church in the Mokattam cliffs, then into Khan el-Khalili. Pick it for the pairing: it's the only tour here that joins the Citadel with the Cave Church in one day.

Citadel, Cave Church and Khan el-Khalili

About this experience

Two hours at the Citadel of Saladin with an hour inside the Muhammad Ali Mosque, an hour at the Cave Church of the Monastery of St Simon in Mokattam, an hour in Khan el-Khalili. That's the itinerary, about six hours. The listing is titled "Coptic & Islamic Cairo", but its Coptic stop is the Cave Church, not the old Coptic quarter with the Hanging Church. One guest's day did take in Coptic Cairo too; if you want it, ask before you book.

Three booking options, all with an Egyptologist and a private car. "Tour Guide + private car" is the $82 one. "Guide + car + Entry fees" adds tickets, and here that only means the Citadel: EGP 550 per foreign adult, about $11, since the Cave Church and the bazaar are free. "Guide + car + Entry fees + felucca" adds a sail on the Nile. The listing also includes the tourism police permission and water, and is marked wheelchair and stroller accessible.

The pickup zone is tight: Giza, Downtown, Zamalek and Dokki. Airport hotels, Nasr City, New Cairo and 6th October cost $7.50 per person extra. Reviews are 4.9 from 94, mostly on Tripadvisor. The one bad recent review on Viator is worth reading: an unannounced stop at a "papyrus museum" that turned out to be a shop, and belongings disturbed in the parked van. Keep valuables on you.

  • The Citadel and the Cave Church in the same day
  • An Egyptologist guide on every option
  • Two full hours at the Citadel
  • Entry fees cost little here: only the Citadel charges
  • Felucca option on the Nile

From the Citadel, Garbage Town, cave church, Coptic Cairo to Bazaar, Naama showed us and told us so many interesting facts. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to cover a lot of Cairo in one day.

Great visit with Sabry who gave me a lot of information and facts about the Citadel, the Mosque, the Church, the market but also about Cairo, its past and present history. Well organised and with a great driver. Highly recommended!

Tips before you book

  • Keep valuables with you. A guest reports bags in the parked van being gone through during the stops.
  • Refuse the "papyrus museum" if you don't want to shop. A guest found it was a friend's shop with inflated prices.
  • The fee option only saves you one window: the Citadel, EGP 550, card only. Pay it yourself if you prefer.
  • Want Coptic Cairo as well? Ask the operator before booking; it isn't on the itinerary.
  • Check your district. Outside Giza, Downtown, Zamalek and Dokki, add $7.50 per person.
